fitness instructor training retreat | Revelation Wellness

If you asked me to do it better, I could not. Every part of my Revelation Wellness fitness instructor training retreat was carefully crafted and strategically planned. From the first night of prayer, inviting God to come and heal the physical pain that was brought to retreat, to the departing prayer of praise for the great things He accomplished in all of us, all glory was given to the One who gave us breath.

In order to free others, you must first be free yourself. This fundamental truth was woven through every workout and workshop we attended.

As we were invited to draw near to God, He drew near to us, bringing with Him the truth of who He is and the authority to boldly embrace who we are in Him: fully forgiven and forever free.

A moment of freedom for me came during our first morning workout. Alissa Keaton, founder of Revelation Wellness, spoke the following over us as we begin to move our bodies:

“In 1/3rd of the Psalms, David starts with, ‘To the choirmaster’ Has anyone noticed that? …I’m here to tell you, welcome choirmasters. Choirmasters. They are the ones who have practiced and listened and know how to put things together for public worship. So in 55 of those Psalms, David is saying, ‘Put this out to the public. Make sure this is sung. Make sure it is corporate. Make sure people know about it.’ And this is you…There is an anointing on each of you as choirmasters.

The word choirmaster also means ‘one who glitters from afar.’ …Isn’t it true? We need a shirt that says ‘I don’t sweat, I glitter!’ Cause as we get moving into choirmasters you are literally glittering. I believe the Lord [is saying], “Look at them. Look at my daughters. Look at my sons willing to step forward and glitter.” So that you glow and the rest of the world goes, ‘What’s going on over there?’”

In a world that often seeks to limit a woman’s voice and power of influence, something in Alissa’s commission resonated deep within my heart. Here was a place to operate boldly within the freedom of the gospel, a place to lean into His goodness and pour out His grace, a place to find freedom and share it openly. These were my people. This is my role.

Pounding out the rhythm of the beat, drumsticks in hand, we glittered brightly. New choir masters conveying an ancient truth: who the Son sets free is free indeed!

You can watch not only Alisia’s choirmaster declaration but the entirety of our workout as it was filmed live here on the Revelation Wellness Facebook page. (Skip ahead to 16:39 in the video to see the drumsticks in action!)

As our week progressed, so did the learning. Workshops taught us the practical components of circuit training, cardio, choreography and drumsticks. Meanwhile, Bible Studies and small groups dove into the subjects of sin, forgiveness, prayer, bible study and body image. We were busy from sun up to sun down. It was equal parts exhilarating and exhausting, life-giving and life-altering.

To be deeply challenged in a highly supportive environment of acceptance offers the best possible recipe for growth. And grow we did. Embracing the mantra of being “comfortable being uncomfortable,” we dug deep, faced fears, told truths, denounced lies, extended forgiveness and led the charge of freedom.

Now that our training week has concluded, 170+ women are returning to their homes and communities ready to embrace the new call upon their life.

I am unique among the crowd in that I’ve only completed part 2 of the two-part Revelation Wellness training protocol because of the unique timing in which I jumped in. This fall I will complete the online training portion, concluding my 200 hours of education. At that time I will be able to fully step into my new role as a “fitness teacher, gospel preacher,” and lead in-person fitness classes as well as lead online wellness-focused small groups. To say that I am excited for what is in store would be an understatement. This 4-minute video is one of several that captured the essence of what our week entailed. I invite you to watch and join me in praising God for the good things He is doing to bring glory to the world through the vehicle of health and fitness.

Many of you joined me in prayerful support during my training retreat. I am truly humbled by your desire to come alongside me, and I want to thank you deeply. If there are any details that I have left out that you are curious about, feel free to leave a comment below!

lifting heavy weights

Where Satan encumbers, Christ emancipates.

The words of Hebrews 12:1 I reminds me of this truth by urging us to, “…lay aside every weight and the sin which clings so closely and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith…

Did you catch the part that said, “laying aside every weight”? I find it interesting to think about the fact that it’s impossible to carry a weight that we have not first willingly picked up.

I believe Satan’s tactics have not changed since the beginning of time. He was there in the garden tempting Adam and Eve to take on the heavy knowledge of evil and he is at it today luring us to shoulder burdens that we were never meant to carry.

Proverbs 12:25 says, “Anxiety in a man’s heart weighs him down, but a good word makes him glad.

Well here’s a good word: God is standing in the gap offering us a better way. He says, “Come to Me all who are weary and heavy laden and I will give you rest…” Matthew 11:28-30

He is not a god of striving, but the Lord of Peace. His best for you will never result in anxiety or stress. When you feel anxious, step back and evaluate the posture of your heart.

But not stressful striving.

Lay all of that down.
Surrender it.
Surrender yourself fully and there you will find His hand holding you firmly.

Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.” 1 Peter 5:7

the danger of a dream

Your dream can become a distraction,” Steven Furtick said in his podcast entitled “The Danger of a Dream.” “Don’t follow your dreams, ’cause what if your dreams were just the first draft? Are you open to a revision?” Steven acutely articulates the atmosphere of my heart. In the last two months, God has been leading me through a time of honest reflection, surrendering of my goals, and embracing His plan.

As I recently shared, this plan has unfolded to reveal an opportunity to attend a fitness instructor training retreat through Revelation Wellness. This retreat begins tomorrow, Sunday, April 28th and concludes on May 3rd. Many of you have reached out to me with encouraging emails through this process and I want to sincerely thank you for your encouragement and support. I’d love to invite you to participate with me in this next step in three specific ways.

First, I’d love for you to pray for all of us attending the retreat. The image below highlights Monday’s prayer requests. If you click here you can view a prayer calendar targeting specific areas to pray over for each of the 5-days of our retreat.

Saying “yes” to something like this requires a bold act of faith. Voices of doubt and fear from the Enemy are sure to come against any good thing that God is desiring to do. I want to be a part of the brave men and women who rise up in bold opposition and embrace our place in God’s grand plan.

Second, consider joining us (virtually) at the retreat through Facebook and Instagram beginning April 28 to participate in some of the best parts of retreat! Continue reading “the danger of a dream”

sardine stability

While visiting the Monterey Bay Aquarium this week, we had the opportunity to observe a feeding in the “deep sea” display. As the woman at the mic explained details of the sea creatures before us, I was immediately impressed by the defense tactics displayed by the sardines.

Living in a habitat of deep open water, void of obvious hiding spots and without the advantage of size to aid in their protection, sardines rely fully on one simple strategy: unity. Moving as a cohesive unit, the motion of their silvery bodies make it difficult for prey to hone in on one specific target. The only hope for successful prey is to attack the group head on. If the enemy fish can get the group to scatter it will create vulnerably and most likely, lunch.

My mind could see a strong correlation to the body of Christ. As believers, unity is paramount to our mission. So much so that it was among the very last things that Jesus Himself prayed for in the night of his betrayal (see John 17). Why would the topic of unity be at the forefront of His mind in a time of such impending pain? I believe He understood that the battle He was about to face in order to free us from the shackles of sin and death would need to be proclaimed throughout the waiting world by people like you and me.

If the enemy (who seeks to steal, kill and destroy) can first create division, he can sabotage our role to play in this important mission. A fragmented message delivered through bickering believers carries little weight. This message of Christ’s hope holds the weight of the world in its balance.

Below are a few snippets of the prayer that Jesus prayed in the garden immediately proceeding his arrest which led to his crucifixion. Notice His longing for us to experience the same kind of unity as He experienced with His one Father in heaven! May we prayerfully desire this same kind of unity in our marriages, homes, community as well as our local and global body of believers. Jesus make us one even as you and Your Father are one!

…that they may be one even as We are.” John 17:11b

“…keep them from the evil one.” John 17:15b

“I do not ask on behalf of these alone, but for those also who believe in Me through their word; that they may all be one; even as You, Father, are in Me and I in You, that they also may be in Us, so that the world may believe that You sent Me. The glory which You have given Me I have given to them, that they may be one, just as We are one; I in them and You in Me, that they may be perfected in unity, so that the world may know that You sent Me, and loved them, even as You have loved Me.” John 17:20-23 (emphasis mine)

The more we travel, the more our hearts long to see this unity lived out in and through us and the greater body of Christ.

Tomorrow we will leave central California and head to Arizona. This Sunday I will begin my 5-day fitness instructor training.  To say that I am excited to experience the unity of purpose and heart of the group I will be training with would be an understatement. I would love to ask for your prayers as I enter into this space. I’ll soon be sharing specific ways you can be praying for me as well as a way for you to live stream some of the instructor training events directly so stay tuned for those details!

40 day fast, 1 new vision

My 40-day break from social media and health coaching has recently concluded. During that time I poured a lot of prayer into specific areas: unity among the believers in the Kamiah, Idaho area, closer relationships with our kids, and seeking direction and wisdom concerning my health coaching business were a few of them.

For the first several weeks, my prayers accended but I didn’t have any specific clarity. However, on day 26 an event occurred that helped bring insight into what I believe God wanted to do within my heart concerning my business: the screen door on our RV fell off its hinges. As a result, we currently have a front door that is either entirely open or completely closed. There is no middle ground. As such, we now notice things we previously overlooked–such as how dirty the inside of our door had become behind the ever-present screen. A prompt, long overdue cleaning ensued because we could now see the situation for what it really was, instead of overlooking it out of situational ignorance.

My time of fasting allowed a similar situation in my heart to occur. At the removal of social media and the pursuit of building my business, I’ve been forced allowed to see things that I’ve been overlooking. Here is what I’ve found: A year ago, when God invited me to use my gifts and my past to encourage women, I took that invitation and ran with it, pouring myself into health coaching and devoting 18-20+ hours a week to the goal of reaching as many women as I could. In the process, I unknowingly created an idol out of the opportunity and I believe missed His intended purpose for me. My blog post here sheds some light on the Biblical story that God used to begin helping me to discover this.

During my fast, God revealed that over time I began to make health coaching about me and what I could do with it instead of about what God wanted to do with it through me. I’ll admit that It’s difficult to recognize unpleasant realities and even harder to share them publicly. Continue reading “40 day fast, 1 new vision”
